Baule Ivory Comb

Ivory Coast

late 19th to early 20th century

It is hard to beat the quality of this Baule ivory comb. If like me you have the curiosity to look on Artkade or AHDRC, you'll find that 98% of Baule ivory combs do not match the quality of this work. Most have square and short prongs and no decoration while this example has round prongs, a masterly decorated handle and carries a small loop for attachement. It also has some good use.

This fine work comes from the collection of the late Olga Hirshhorn. Hirshhorn collected works by Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, Rodin, Picasso, Man Ray, etc. as well as works from Asia and Africa, in particular jewelry.

The comb is in good condition and it is mounted on an custom base by Romain Laforêt. I date it to the end of the 19th to very early 20th Century.
