Konda Sword

Konda people

Democratic Republic of Congo

19th to early 20th century

This superb ancient sword with handle and scabbard covered in brass tacks comes from the Konda people of today's Democratic Republic of Congo.

The overall shape has a feminine appeal and reminds me in particular the glamorous sheath dresses from the 1930's Hollywood productions. Getting back to ethnography I include a field photograph from an unknown source.

This beautiful piece is from the turn of the 20th century, comes from Dieter Schaffner, Germany, and sits on an old gold brass and patinated oak custom stand by Romain Laforêt.
