Teke figure

Republic of Congo

Wood, magical charge, dirt patina

33 cm

Late 19th to early 20th Cent.

The large crest coiffure, curbed shaped beard, conical ears and alternate scarifications on the face make this big Teke fetish figure very unique.

The magical charge is fixed directly on the abdoment (and not in a cavity  - usually covered by clay and fabric)

It is hard to give it a sub-attribution (Teke-Yanzi?) but let me know what you think.

Provenance: Colonial collection, Lannion, France ; Collection Dimitri Pavlus, Wattrelos, France.
