Djenne sculpture

Mali

Terracotta

10 cm

14th to 16th Cent.

A wonderful Djenne sculpture of a man crouching covered in pustules.

What drove me to this piece is the intense emotion radiating from it as if, born from a ball of clay, the human destiny was also to end as a ball of clay, thus rejoining the nurturing earth.

A bundle of emotions from one of Africa's most ancient, yet mysterious, culture to this day.

Note the piece is complete and not restored, which is quite rare.

Provenance: Michel Vinavier (writer, theatre author), Paris ; By descent.
