Swazi culture, Swaziland or South Africa
Late 19th to early 20th Century
This is a fine headrest from the Swazi culture of Swaziland or South Africa.
In meridional Africa, headrests have been used to protect elaborate coiffures and relay the status, gender and age of the wearer.
This example is particularly fine and distinctive for its balanced, elegant and monumental form.
It is in good condition and comes from the collection of Karl-Ferdinand Schaedler which was dispersed at Sotheby's in 2016 (Lot 21)
