Leopard

Kingdom of Benin, Edo people, Nigeria

Late 18th to early 19th Century

 

Possibly from the top of a container “Iru”,  this wonderful leopard is made of copper alloy (bronze)

 

According to Jay C Leff (note) it dates from the late 18th to early 19th century.

 

Provenance: Possibly Charles Ratton (1895-­‐1986) Paris, France (inv. # 3524 under the base), Jay C Leff (1925-­‐2000) Uniontown, PA until 1962, Arthur A Cohen (1928-­‐1986) and Elaine Lustig Cohen (1927-­‐2016) NY, NY, Family member by descent until 2018.

 

Exhibited and Published : “Exotic Art from Ancient and Primitive Civilizations, Collection of Jay C. Leff”, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, October 1959-­‐January 1960. Published in above exhibition’s catalogue but not illustrated, #309.
