Igbo maskette

Circa 1930-1950

We are not specialists of the ancient arts of Nigeria in any way but could sense age and quality on this maskette which originates from the Igbo people.

The maskette presents naturalistic features with what seems to be tattooes or scarifications. It was interesting to find an old photograph (unknown source) of Aro women, a sub-group of the Igbo people, depicting the exact same hairdoo.

The piece comes from an old parisian collection and comes on an equallty old metal stand with butterfly screw.
